When you are looking at mobile phone deals it is worth considering the Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB as an option. The iPhone is now available for use with more than one mobile network, and as a result there are some good mobile phone deals to be had.
What makes the iPhone standout from the crowd a very sought after phone, is it’s multi-touch touchscreen, it’s ease of use, amazing multimedia capabilities, and the astounding number of apps available for download from the iTunes app store.
The iPhone comes packed with Apple’s modified MacOS system which is almost identical to the OS employed by the iPod Touch, giving you a mini/multimedia computing experience at your fingertips, add phone capabilities and you have yourself a great all-round smartphone. Apple is constantly striving to improve upon their existing technology, so expect a newer version of the OS later this year.
Physical Aspects:
The iPhone weight 135 grams which is about 4.8 ounces and measures 115 x 61 x 11.6 mm. The screen is a hefty 3.5 inches and the resolution is 320 x 480 at 160 ppi. Both versions of the iPhone 3G are available in black, with the 16GB you also have the choice of selecting a white model which is an option not currently available for the 8GB variation.
What usually identifies a smartphone from other phones is the QWERTY keyboard, which either replaces the standard number pads, or in most cases slides out from the main body of the phone. A distinguishing feature of the iPhone, is a lack of a visible keyboard, which is because it comes with a virtual keyboard that pops up on screen whenever text input is required. The keyboard replicates the key layout of a standard PC keyboard, so most users should not have a problem mastering it immediately.
In terms of connectivity the iPhone provides the unique ability to join a wireless network via Wi-Fi but also includes expected standards of providing EDGE and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.
Major Functions
The call quality of the iPhone is excellent and the lithium battery provides up to 5 hours of talk, video and browsing time and up to 16 hours of audio playback time. The 3.5 megapixel camera provides decent images as good as can be expected from a 3.5 mp phone camera, and rumours have it that Apple has started work on producing a 5 megapixel camera for future versions of the phone.
The iPhone has a 30 pin iPod connector and built-in speakers to help you to enjoy your multimedia experience. Loudspeakers are located above the screen and on the left side at the bottom of the phone.
There’s a nifty proximity sensor built into the iPhone which detects the phone’s proximity to your ear when on calls and automatically turns off the display to conserve power. Also if that wasn’t enough, the device comes equipped with an ambient light sensor which adjusts the display brightness automatically based on the current ambient light available in a particular location.
Surfing on the iPhone is done through the Safari web browser which provides Google and Yahoo search functionally and works independently from other online services, such as email, so you have the options to browse the net and download email simultaneously.
GPS is provided through the use of Google maps, so traffic reports and direction are always available.
Multimedia:
There are over 6000 applications including games available from the iPhone app store and over 100 of them are free. With so many app choices it’s hard not to find an application to keep you entertained for hours on end. Most of the apps are great and very affordable with each app averaging in around $4.00, but there is the ever present risk that you might go app purchase crazy and lose track of your spending. Remember to stay focused on apps that you need, as opposed to grabbing anything that might take your fancy!
The Accelerometer of the iPhone is a big plus. It allows images, videos, websites ect...to rotate with the display as the phone is rotated and adjusts the ratio accordingly.
When it comes to music and video content playback the iPhone shines. The phone can easily be used solely as a music/mps player and provides an identically user interface and functionality as Apple’s iPod Touch. The iPod feature gives you access to music and video with just a tap on the screen, however at times we did experienced a slight lag and distortion of our playback content but overall it works fine.
The User Friendliness of the iPhone 3G:
The OS system is awesome; It takes less than ½ a GB of storage and handles bundles and future applications from Apple. It takes a little time to adjust to the multi-touch system, but with practice, it becomes very easy to navigate and use different apps on the fly. You can get stock reports, weather reports and other helpful information with ease
.
iPhone 3G Is It Worth It?
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in the case of the iPhone, it’s in the hand. The iPhone stands head and shoulders above the competition. Apple continues to add more innovated features to the system, so we ask, is the iPhone worth it? In a word, absolutely!
